Assistant Principal Jobs in District of Columbia

An Assistant Principal, also known as a Vice Principal, is an integral part of a school's administration team. They fulfil a variety of roles that may include managing school activities, overseeing daily school operations, coordinating curriculum, supervising teachers and staff, monitoring student progress, and enforcing disciplinary rules. They also assist the Principal in more complex administrative tasks and act as the Principal in their absence. Some Assistant Principals may also have specific responsibilities such as Special Education or Discipline Coordinator.

Prior to becoming an Assistant Principal, individuals may hold positions such as Classroom Teacher, Department Head, or School Counselor. Importantly, they must have a strong educational background, often including a Master's Degree in Education Administration or a related field. An administrative certification is also usually required. Key skills for this role encompass strong leadership, excellent communication, good organizational skills, and the ability to make decisions in a fast-paced environment. An understanding of curriculum development, budgeting, and school law are also vital to the role.
